Hockey in East Lothian

Since the start of the new school term there has been an abundance of hockey in the primary and secondary schools.

The Secondary School Core Hockey Programme started in August with 2 hockey championships taking place at Meadowmill Sports Centre for S1 and S2 girls.

Since its inception in 2003 the Core Hockey Programme has seen all of the secondary schools battling for the trophy. But North Berwick High School has been champion almost every year in both age groups. However Preston Lodge High School has been a thorn in their side for 5 years and this year was no different. Preston Lodge went into this years tournament as defending champions for the S2 trophy and managed to push North Berwick into 2nd to pick up the title for the second year in succession.

However the following week North Berwick pushed Knox Academy and Preston Lodge into 2nd and 3rd place, respectively and held the S1 trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

In the beginning of October the East Lothian Primary School Sports Association P7 tournament was also held at Meadowmill Sports Centre. In the past, Cockenzie, Law and Tranent Primary Schools have been strong contenders for the title. This year however, Pencaitand Primary School became champions for the very first time beating Cockenzie into 2nd place. Both schools will go forward next year to represent East Lothian Primary Schools in the Regional Hockey Finals in May and the National Primary Festival (run by Scottish Hockey) in June.

Following the ELPSSA festival was the P6 Tranent Cluster Festival, which took place at Ross High School. Over 150 pupils attended on a very cold and windy day. Students from Telford College helped umpire all the games.

East Lothian Men’s Hockey Club is a new club formed thanks to funding from Awards For All. East Lothian Hockey Development Group made the application last year with the bulk of the money being used to set up the new club. Training is every Monday at North Berwick High School from 6.30pm – 8pm. Ladies are also welcome to train at the club. The funding from A4A was also used to set up a junior club to cover the Tranent Cluster.
