Haddington P6 Hockey Festival
On Wednesday 28 April at the Aubigny Sports Centre P6 pupils from Kings Meadow, St Mary’s and Yester primary schools took part in the Haddington Cluster Hockey Festival. It was a warm, sunny day and there were over 100 children taking part in the event.
There were 19 teams all playing 5 games each, which were umpired by students from Edinburgh’s Telford College.
The schools each received 2 visits from the East Lothian hockey Development Officer who spent 2 hours preparing the children for the festival. They were coached on passing and receiving, defending skills and movement with the ball, which they put into good practice during the mornings matches.

First Hockey Match for East Lothian U12 Hockey Development Squad
The East Lothian U12 Hockey Development Squad played their first hockey matches on Friday 29 January since returning to training in September last year.
Their matches were against Loretto who turned up at Meadowmill Sports Centre with 2 teams. It was a beautiful but very cold day. 4 matches were played of which East Lothian won 2 and lost 2. The cold weather did not put off the many parents who came to support all of the teams. The U12 squad is made up of players from all over the authority.

Between them, Pinkie, Burgh, Loretto, Campie and Stoneyhill entered 40 teams. The teams were divided up throughout the day with half playing in the morning and half playing in the afternoon.
The schools had been preparing hard for the festival. Two weeks prior to the festival each school received 2 hours of coaching organised by the Hockey Development Officer. P7 ELPSSA Tournament
The P7 East Lothian Hockey Tournament took place on Wednesday 07 October at Meadowmill Sports Centre. The tournament, organised by the EL Hockey Development Officer is run in conjunction with the East Lothian Primary School Sports Association (ELPSSA).
5 teams entered the tournament from Pinkie, Gullane, Yester and Cockenzie. Unfortunately the defending champions, Pencaitland were unable to attend, which allowed the other schools a fair crack of the whip.
The tournament was based on a round-robin format with each game lasting 15 minutes. This gave the teams, made up of 6 players (3 boys and 3 girls), the opportunity to show off their skills and goal scoring ability.
From the start it was evident that there were 2 schools that were racing ahead, Cockenzie and Yester. Cockenzie had won the title before on several occasions and had also been runners-up so Yester had their work cut out for them. In the end it came down to the final game of the tournament, which was between the 2 teams. Yester inched ahead halfway through the match and at full time the score ended 2 – 0, Yester becoming the new P7 tournament champions
Yester and Cockenzie will now represent East Lothian in the Hockey Regional Finals in May 2010 in Mid Lothian and the National Primary School Festival in June 2010 in Edinburgh
