Great Weekend for Lothian Shuttlers

Lothian Disability Badminton club had a great weekend at the 4 Nations Disability Badminton  Championships held over the weekend of February 19-21 at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

The Scottish event had over 100 entries in the Learning Disability, Standing Class 1&2, 3&4, Dwarfs and 2 wheelchair categories, with players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales battling it out over 3 hectic days.

Lothian Disability club player Alan Oliver, a previous winner of the Standing class 1&2 category, made it a home victory, by defeating his much improved club colleague Conor McFarlane in the final. Neill Jarvie also from the club again had some excellent performances in the group stages of the standing class and gets better with each event.

Alan and Conor then teamed up in the combined doubles event, and played magnificently to win all their group matches before narrowly loosing out in the final to the top English Bruno Forbes and Daniel Lee, a pair they had beaten in 3 very close sets the previous day.

With the success of the players from the LDBC along with further excellent Scottish performances in the LD, Wheelchair and Dwarf categories, the Scottish Disability Badminton group will now be looking to stage it’s first ever ‘National Squad’ session on May 1st. On this weekends showing it is hoped that 5 of the LDBC will be invited to attend, namely Oliver, McFarlane, Jarvie along with Morag Johnson and Kirsty Jones in the wheelchair class.

The Lothian Disability Badminton club meet on a Tuesday evening from 7-9 at Musselburgh Sports centre and are looking for more physically disabled players to come along and have a go.

The 4 Nations series has gone from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2007 and now boasts events in all the 4 Nations, Scotland being the third of this seasons series. The English leg now completes the series in April and once again it is hoped that the LDBC will have a strong showing.

“We are delighted with the development of the club and the players, coaches and helpers who come along week in week out. It’s great to be able to cater for all the physical disabilities and also to pick up some trophies along the way” stated a delighted LDBC Chairperson, Lyndon Williams.
